The Maison Blanc group’s history stretches back to 1981 when chef Raymond Blanc opened his first authentic French Boulangerie and Patisserie in Oxford.
Today, this mini-empire extends to 14 outlets across the South of England and Henley-on-Thames is lucky enough to be home to one of them.
The Henley branch offers a full array of freshly baked artisan breads, pastries and savouries, together with a selection of cakes and related treats.
And the associated cafe offers excellent quality food in a lively atmosphere full of French personality and filled with the wonderful aromas of freshly-cooked food.
On the day of our visit we were in the mood for a simple light lunch so we opted for French onion soup and a croque monsieur, accompanied by two glasses of deliciously zingy French lemonade.
The soup was rich and packed with the authentic flavours you’d expect, and the croque monsieur was full of delicious, well-sourced ingredients, notably the cheese which had toasted well and was a real treat.
Both dishes were around the £5 mark which represented good value for money, but the lemonade was nearly £3 a glass which was overpriced and made the lunch more expensive than we would have wished.
The younger members of staff could perhaps have done with a smile painted on their faces and an injection of personality to match the venue’s cheerfulness, but aside from this Maison Blanc is well worth a visit.
The food quality is excellent, there is plenty of seating and the venue has a prime location in the centre of Henley; just avoid the pop if you want to keep your costs down.
